What did phosphate do?

Phosphate binds the calcium and magnesium that make water hard, boosting detergent efficiency. For decades, it was the 'hidden power' in both laundry and dishwasher detergents.

Why is it being removed?

Phosphate reaching lakes and rivers via wastewater triggers massive algae blooms — 'eutrophication'. Algae consume water oxygen; fish die, drinking water deteriorates, ecosystems break.

Turkey, in line with EU regulations, has restricted phosphate in domestic dishwasher detergents. Most modern products are phosphate-free for this reason.

What's the alternative?
